Directions to Kilbourne Hole maar -- Take Exit 8 on I-10 (Artcraft Road/Pete
Domenici Hwy 136/178) and go west and, after a few miles, south for 7
miles.
Turn right on Airport Rd. and then make an immediate left on Industrial
Rd. Go a few blocks, cross the RR tracks and make a right on a County
Rd. A17. Go 11 miles and make a left on County Rd. A11 (you will
know it's the right road because you just passed a 4 acre field filled
with piles of black rock on your left). Go 8 miles to the maar. To
get to the top of the rim, you must have good 4WD. If not, drive
on the road that is at the base of the rim and follow it to a cattle
guard crossing, turn left, and follow that road as far as you can go.
It goes to the top of the rim and the east launch is just up and to the left.
Unless we are going out there, you will have to follow
your nose. This site is remote with no services or water.
There can be some cell service from the top of the rim. The U.S. Border patrol
constantly monitors this area of the country for illegal aliens and
contraband using land vehicles and aircraft. You may be
stopped at any time and searched if you are not a local. Watch out
for cattle in the area, especially at night!
